NEWBUILD JOINS GALICIA’S COASTAL FLEET
Novo Coral is a gamble at a time when the sector is getting smaller. Owner Berto Núñez will work with a crew of six, searching for species such as mackerel, horse mackerel and sardine aboard his new vessel, built by by Astilleros Polymade.
Galicia’s small-scale fleet is one of the oldest in Europe and the tendency year after year is to take out old units. There’s a continuous decline of this sector throughout Spain and few dare to take the step to build a new boat. However, there are still some brave ones – and Astilleros Polymade has just delivered Novo Coral to its young owner.
Although it is not yet at sea, the vessel is already attracting the attention of many fishermen and interested visitors to the port of Vigo. This is not so much because of its size, as it has small dimensions, but because this is a recent newbuild – something that, unfortunately, has become unusual.

Novo Coral measures 11.95 metres in length and has a 4.40-metre beam, and although it may not look like it, it replaces a boat that had smaller dimensions.
Its owner is Berto Núñez, a young man from the town of Redondela (located right next to Vigo) who, at 36 years of age, has embarked on this new adventure to try to continue making the most of fishing. In doing so, he is also continuing the family’s fishing saga.

‘It runs in the family’, he said, explaining that he used to work with a smaller boat which, as soon as a little fish came in, started to have problems.
‘As soon as you loaded a little, you had water on the deck’, he said.
For this reason, he contacted Eugenio Martínez, at Astilleros Polymade, to order small boat with a greater carying capacity. This is how Novo Coral came about, built in fiberglass reinforced plastic (GRP) that corresponds to the Polymade 1200 model, the largest one the yard manufactures.
At just under 12 metres in length, Novo Coral is the largest design in the Astilleros Polymade range / Con algo menos de 12 metros de eslora, el Novo Coral es el mayor barco diseñado de la gama de Astilleros Polymade
For this, Novo Coral is outfitted with Simrad electronics and the deck has a F0350 crane from Fuerte, a company also located in Silleda in the province of Pontevedra.
Berto Núñez has been ‘in the fishing sector all his life’, although he has been working with the racú gear for about twelve years. He acknowledges that the situation is not easy at present and that few people dare to buy a new boat.
‘As there are no subsidies, people don’t want to complicate things’, he explained.

Novo Coral is about to start working, while Astilleros Polymade will continue with the construction work it usually carries out for this segment of the fishing fleet. The shipyard is located in the town of Portonovo, also in the province of Pontevedra, and its origins date back to 1978, when its founders began as shipbuilders making sailing boats, later making the leap from wood to fibreglass construction.
The company has managed to deliver boats to more than 50 ports all over Spain and has even reached countries such as Cape Verde and Norway, where their designs and good prices attracted the attention of local shipowners. They work on both shaft and outboard boats, mainly for the professional sector, and have developed more than 20 different models.
According to Eugenio Martínez, they are currently ‘at full capacity’ and, in fact, they will be present at the maritime fair in Vigo, Navalia, to present their latest innovations and try to increase their volume of orders. In the past, they also collaborated with the engineering consultancy Ingemar, a Vigo-based firm that designs small craft and bateeiros, but also passenger vessels and large fishing boats.
